How To Easily Determine Your Skin Type

I’d love to say that the first thing people notice when they meet you are those awesome red bottom heels that you saved up to buy (girl congrats!) but it’s not.  The first thing a person notices when they meet you are your beautiful eyes, your gorgeous smile and your skin. This isn’t a post to make you freak out about that pimple that popped up after a long night out but more so how to determine your skin type in order for you to find products that work specifically for you. So let’s make this short and sweet and let me show you just how easily you can determine your skin type.

The Five Types Of Skin…

NORMAL. Those that have ‘normal’ skin find that their skin doesn’t really dry up or become oily throughout the day. Although seasonal changes often create dryness in the winter and oiliness in the summer, these people rarely have skin issues, many with normal skin have found an occasional pimple here and there despite their skin type but typically nothing more. Normal skin is much more tolerable in trying new products and ingredients including typically irritating ones that are known to cause sensitivity.

DRY. Those that worry about their skin becoming irritated and flaky especially in the winter and right after the shower despite the amount of moisturizer applied typically suffer from dry skin. After a shower especially a long hot one, many find that their skin feels itchy and tight from dehydration.  Skin is usually found to be dry and flaking during the middle of the day without the usual amount of oil skin usually produces. It’s just something you don’t experience which leaves you needing to apply thicker creams and moisturizers more often than most.

COMBINATION. Talk about having the ‘best’ of both worlds! Those with combination skin may find themselves wanting to catch a break.  Their skin can become dry and dehydrated while some sections are oily and producing a shine. The ‘T zone’ which consists of the forehead and down the nose and chin are more often found with larger pores that appear more visible than those other areas of the face such as the cheeks that may experience smaller pores and dry patches.

SENSITIVE. Irritation and redness are no stranger to those with sensitive skin. Majority find that when experimenting with new products, they find their skin may become angry and irritated due to the chemicals and ingredients found in them. Fragrances and added colors are two ingredients popularly found in products that although make it seem more appealing, it causes skin issues to flare up. Those with sensitive skin usually have a skincare condition like eczema, rosacea or psoriasis.

OILY. Those with oily skin find themselves no matter how much they blot their skin, they’re found with a good amount of excess oil left remaining. Skin appears shiny and in many cases greasy with a greater than normal amount of oil being produced. Pores appear visibly larger and more open throughout their face and not just in one small area. Those with this type of skin will experience breakouts fairly often and may even have trouble keeping them under control.

Your skin should always be pampered and that means always taking care of it and keeping it healthy. Before trying out any new product or ingredient begin by conducting a patch test on a small area on the inside of your forearm to observe if any adverse reactions take place. Those that have moderate to severe skin conditions should speak with their doctor before beginning a new product. Try products one at a time and ease your way into it by starting off once a week and working your way up to the recommended amount.
Get to know your skin and be proud of the skin you’re in!

What skin condition have you experienced when trying new skincare products? I’d love to know!
